Senegal and Gambia

A classic

Duration: 12 days.

Senegal is a classic among travellers who begin to explore the sub-Saharan world.

It is a very popular destination, yes, but no less interesting for that, especially because we propose you to discover it from a different point of view.

Throughout the trip, we will visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites, get to know different ethnic groups and experience ancestral customs, all on a varied and peaceful route.

From Loana Travel we propose you to discover two of the most visited countries in Africa in a different way, moving away from the conventional and getting closer to its true essence.

Day 1: Arrival in Senegal

We will arrive in Senegal and transfer to the hotel to rest and adapt to the new surroundings.

Day 2: Dakar

We start the day exploring the capital of Senegal. We will visit the city centre, its markets, the African Renaissance Monument, and the IFAN Museum of African Arts, where we will learn more about Senegalese art and culture.

In the afternoon, we will enjoy the spectacular arrival of the fishermen at the port, where the brightly painted boats create a unique and fascinating atmosphere.

Day 3: Gorée Island

Today we will take a ferry from Dakar to visit the historic Gorée Island, one of the most emblematic places in the history of the African slave trade.

We will visit the building where enslaved people were confined before being shipped to the Americas, and stroll through the island’s charming colonial streets, which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We will spend the night on Gorée to enjoy it peacefully, away from the tourists, and we will visit the Artists’ Avenue — a corner filled with local art and creativity.

Day 4: Dakar – Thiès – Saint Louis

We return to Dakar and then continue on a 4–5 hour journey to Saint Louis, passing through Thiès, where we can visit its interesting basket market.

We will arrive in the afternoon at Saint Louis, a city founded by French settlers in the 17th century and urbanised in the mid-19th century, playing a key role in the culture and economy of West Africa.

Since 2000, it has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking through its streets, crossing the Senegal River, and enjoying the local cuisine in one of its excellent restaurants is a true delight.

Day 5: Saint Louis – Touba – Tambacounda

A long journey awaits us towards the southeast, passing through Touba — a city of great significance in Senegalese Islam, as it is the holy capital of the Mouride brotherhood, a Sunni order founded in 1883 by Amadou Bamba, a highly influential figure.

In Touba, we will visit the largest mosque in West Africa, and in the afternoon, we will arrive in Tambacounda, where we will spend the night.

Days 6 and 7: Bassari Country and Bedik Country

We will travel to Kedougou, in the centre of Senegal, where we will spend two days exploring this fascinating region.

We will have the opportunity to get to know some of the most remarkable ethnic groups in West Africa, such as the Bassari and the Bedik, and discover their traditions, clothing, distinctive earrings and jewellery, as well as their unique architecture.

We will spend both nights in Kedougou.

Days 8 and 9: Casamance

We will head south to a fascinating region that we will explore using Ziguinchor as our base, where we will stay for two nights.

In this area, known for its animist traditions, we will immerse ourselves in its ancestral dances and rituals, as Casamance is the region of Senegal where this religion remains most vibrant.

We will enjoy a boat trip along the Casamance River, where we may spot dolphins, and we will visit various villages to delve into their culture and customs.

Days 10–12: The Gambia

The final leg of our journey will be dedicated to exploring this small yet fascinating country, with a special focus on its coast, where we will enjoy its landscapes, unspoilt beaches, and charming fishing villages.

At the end of Day 12, we will take our return flight, either from Banjul or Dakar (Senegal), bringing this unforgettable journey to a close.
