Mauritania

Life in the desert

Duration: 10 days.

Mauritania, the perfect combination of Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa, presents itself as a culturally and naturally fascinating country.

The Sahara, which dominates much of the country, influences every aspect of life in Mauritania, a place that maintains its authenticity, far from mass tourism. Now, with Loana Travel, you’ll have the chance to explore it.

With UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the middle of the desert and the unique experience of travelling on the Iron Train, this trip promises to be an adventure like no other.

Day 1: Arrival in Mauritania

Landing in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania. Upon arrival, we will take a transfer to the hotel, where we can rest before starting the adventure the following day.

Days 2 and 3: Nouakchott

We will explore Nouakchott, a city full of history and culture. We will visit its markets, mosques, and walk through its streets, enjoying the unique atmosphere of this Sahelian city.

Days 4 and 5: Chinguetti

After breakfast, we will set off towards Chinguetti — a fascinating city in the heart of the desert. Along the way, we will enjoy the arid and peaceful landscapes that define this unique region as we delve deeper into the Sahara.

Upon arrival, we will visit Chinguetti, a city of great historical value, known for its adobe buildings. Founded in the 12th century as an important point on the Saharan trade routes, Chinguetti stands out for its libraries — a cultural heritage that earned it recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

Days 6 and 7: Zouérat and the Iron Train

After a five-hour journey north, we will experience one of the most thrilling adventures for any traveller: a 24-hour journey on the longest train in the world, which transports iron ore from Zouérat to the coast. An experience that will make this trip a true adventure.

Loana Travel cannot be held responsible if this activity cannot be carried out, as its execution depends on factors beyond our control.

Days 8, 9 and 10: Banc d’Arguin National Park

We will head south to visit Nouadhibou. From there, we will continue the return journey to Nouakchott, making a stop at Mauritania’s most important national park — declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site — where the contrast between desert dunes and Atlantic waters creates a unique and richly textured landscape.

On day 10 of the trip, we will arrive in Nouakchott, take one final stroll and go to the airport at the scheduled time.
