Ghana

Ashanti Country Tour

Duration: 11 days.

The architectural variety of Ghana, the most developed country in the Gulf of Guinea, has led both its medieval fortresses on the coast and the rural architecture of the interior to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ghana combines a history of ancient African kingdoms and colonial heritage with a spectacular natural setting of beaches and lakes.

Day 1: International Flight and Arrival

After the international flight, we will arrive in Accra, where we will take a transfer to the hotel to rest and recover from the journey. Depending on the arrival time, we may take a walk through the city and have a first encounter with the atmosphere of the Ghanaian capital.

Day 2: Accra – Cape Coast

We will begin the trip with a visit to the capital, Accra. We will walk through the old neighbourhood, where fishermen still use traditional fishing techniques. We will also explore some of the most important historical sites to understand the role of the country’s leaders in the struggle for Pan-Africanism. One of the most curious visits we can make is to the coffin makers — they build coffins reflecting the profession of the deceased; truly a sight to behold.

After this introduction to the history of Ghana, we will continue our journey towards Cape Coast.

Day 3: Cape Coast

After breakfast, we will continue our exploration along the slave route. We will visit one of the most iconic castles on the Gulf of Guinea — a key site in the history of the slave trade and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 4: Elmina and Kakum National Park

We will begin the day visiting an impressive fish market, where, at dawn, we can enjoy the sight of colourful boats arriving at the port.

Then we will continue to Kakum National Park — one of the highlights of the journey due to its stunning scenery. There, we will take a walk through one of the best-preserved primary forests in the Gulf of Guinea.

Days 5 and 6: Ashanti Region

We will spend two days exploring the Ashanti region, starting with Kumasi, where we will gain insight into the culture of this ethnic group and visit the Royal Palace — a space dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich Ashanti heritage.

We will also discover the Ashanti buildings located northeast of Kumasi, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These monuments are the last remaining physical traces of a civilisation that reached its height in the 18th century, built using wood, earth and straw — now at risk of disappearing due to time and climate conditions.

Day 7: Kumasi – Koforidua

After breakfast, we will head east across beautiful and varied landscapes.

We will arrive in Koforidua, a city surrounded by mountains and nature, known as an important trading centre. As we arrive on a Friday — the busiest market day — we will visit its famous bead market.

Days 8 to 10: Koforidua – Akosombo (Lake Volta)

We will continue our journey to Lake Volta, a perfect blend of nature and culture. In this region, ancestral traditions remain alive, such as ancestor worship and the initiation of virgin girls.

With Akosombo Hotel as our base, we will explore this unique area around Lake Volta, full of fascinating highlights.

Day 11: Akosombo – Accra

On our final tour day, we will set off early to avoid any traffic issues and reach the capital, where we will have time for some last-minute shopping. At the scheduled time, we will head to the airport for the return flight.
